Casual Contemporary
(whole house renewal)

Goals: Improve main entry, create more space around the stairs both interior and exterior, create a new larger functional kitchen, and redesign the basement floor plan to increase usefulness of the area. In addition, the deck off the dining room needed to be reconfigured for better entertaining usability. The third garage could be absorbed into the interior space if needed.

This 1970’s split entry home needed lots of help. The public parts of the upper floor had the roof raised to create 9' ceilings. A two-story addition created additional space for the enlarged kitchen while also expanding the lower level family room. On the opposite side of the house, a new front entry room was created with space for a bench and convenient coat closet. The stairway was revised by turning the lower run 90 degrees to the entryway. By widening these stairs and rerouting them, there no longer was the claustrophobic feeling of being pushed up or down the stairs as one entered the home. The new kitchen shares the entertaining space with an enlarged living room and dining room. This great room creates easy socializing space for friends and family. The over-sized French-styled, sliding doors give easy access to the improved deck. With its partial cover from the new roof extension, al fresco dining is now possible throughout the year.
